Looking for a song
I'm going to send out a little request to by readership(both of you,) if anyone knows anything about or even recalls this song that was a favourite of mine as an angsty teen. I used to hear it on CKBY(before it was called Y105, then Y101), It's called "Farewell St Louis" and I've never found any info about the artist--his name is apparently John Jordan, Google has nothing--I might still have a .WAV file recorded off the radio of it(which at the time was a gigantic file requiring serious commitment to keep around, like 40Mb!) somewhere on an old hard drive. Here are the lyrics as I recall them, if they ring a bell:
Farewell St. Louis
There's a cowboy next door singing songs
that never seem to end
And your radio's got God on every station
She's still sleeping right beside you
She's been a lot more than a friend
You've been a lot less than an overnight sensation
You look out your only window
And the brick wall view reminds you
That there's still a few things standing in your way
You think you've overstayed your welcome
When the facts might only find you've
Really only overwelcomed your stay
There's a scarecrow on your stairway
He's sitting talking to himself
There's a baby crying somewhere in your distance
There's a preacher on your sidewalk
He's telling everybody else
about your straight and narrow path of least resistance
And there's a world outside your doorway
That keeps peeking through your keyhole
Like you've got a treasure hidden in your room
But you're the only thing together in a world of broken people
Who spent their whole lives simply dodging the bull[?]
[It might be "dodging buffalo" which makes less sense but
since when does that matter? ]
Chorus
Farewell St Louis
Goodbye my friend
I hope I get to see you someday again
Farewell St Louis
I've got to fly
My time just keeps getting shorter
St Louis Goodbye
St Louis Goodbye
Now if they gave a prize for compromise
Oh you'd win it every year
Still you don't choose to lose
Until you lose the nerve to
And yet even with the uses of excuses it ain't clear
Just how to give yourself to things that don't deserve you
Now if they find a cure for sanity
You'll be the first to take it
You'll be waiting when they open up the store
But until that day you'll just have to face the fact
That you can't fake it
You ain't leaving 'till you've walked out the door
(Chorus)
