Some Country Music Linkage--err, rambling, or something

A couple weeks ago, for the first time ever I decided to check out something I saw on the CJOH weatherman's weekend entertainment picks and saw Corb Lund, knowing not the first thing about him.

He and his band The Hurtin' Albertans seem to be categorized as "alt-country," but so far "alt" as to flip into very straight traditional country. I think I read the term "post-alt" somewhere. Did I mention he used to be in a punk band? He apparently gets a lot of Canadian country radio airplay--shows how up I am on that "scene"--with this novelty song about stuck pick-ups. I knew it was going to be good a pretty good show when the recording played as they were coming out was Johnny Horton's (historically inaccurate) Sink the Bismarck.

He did a couple covers, one was the first time I'd ever heard "Seven Spanish Angels" live, and he finished the set with Waylon Jennings' Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way. Looking that up I stumbled across a couple clips of the legendary Highwaymen--Waylon, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson, the first country "supergroup." I don't know how long ago I last heard The Highwayman, it sent a chill down my spine, certainly my favourite song about reincarnation.
